abirdwhale Kakinoki Masato is an artist, researcher (PhD), film music composer/producer, musician, writer, photographer, vocalist and community manager. He’s been inquiring into the tacit understanding of sexuality and love through various projects such as his essay film, When Talking About Romance, Sex and Love: Soseki, Ogai, Hongo Ward and Its Periphery, and his startup project, Future Marriage. Currently based in London and Tokyo, Kakinoki is involved in multiple Web3/NFT projects as a community manager.

He started making and performing music while in high school, and performed at ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL in 2008. After moving to the UK, he completed an MA in Music and Sonic Media at University of Sussex in 2013. He completed a PhD in Music with the project of audiovisual digital music performance at Canterbury Christ Church University (2017), where he was granted Canterbury Christ Church University Graduate School Scholarship. From 2018 to 2019, he was a visiting artist and postdoctoral researcher at CRiSAP (Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice), LCC, University of the Arts London, funded by the Pola Art Foundation.

In his research-based art practice, he has been working on sex and relationship norms, literature, local histories and food culture. His exhibitions include We, Questioning Norms of Love and Sex, and Attempting to Build Love Relationships with Hongo (When Talking About Romance, Sex and Love. Soseki, Ogai, Hongo Ward and Its Periphery) (Tokyo Arts and Space, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, 2019) and By Way of Returns (London, 2019). His works have been exhibited and performed at other places including Whitechapel Gallery’s contemporary arts festival (Nocturnal Creatures), the ArtReview Bar and Cafe OTO (London); International Conference on Live Interfaces (Porto); GENERATE!° Festival for Electronic Arts (Tübingen); Tallinn Music Week Festival (Tallinn) and DOMMUNE (Tokyo). The works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He won the remix contest held by the record label PROGRESSIVE FOrM in 2015, and released the album 0000 through the label (2017). He made film music for chelfitsch Theater Company (Toshiki Okada), Satoko Yokohama, Shingo Ota, Yoi Kawakubo, Nogizaka46, HKT46 and Kamen Joshi. The film music works have been screened internationally, including Tokyo International FIlm Festival and The National Art Center, Tokyo.

高校時代から音楽活動をはじめ、2008年ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVALに出演。その後渡英し、2013年サセックス大学のメディア・映画・音楽学部音楽学科卒業、修士号（音楽および音響メディア）取得。カンタベリークライストチャーチ大学に特待生で入学し、2017年学術博士号（音楽）を取得（デジタル音楽のオーディオビジュアルパフォーマンスのプロジェクト）。2018-2019年、ポーラ美術振興財団からの助成を受け、ロンドン芸術大学ロンドン・カレッジ・オブ・コミュニケーションCreative Research into Sound Arts Practiceに客員芸術家およびポストドクター研究員として在籍。

リサーチ・ベースのアート制作においては、性愛規範、文学、郷土史、食文化などを扱ってきた。主な展示に「性愛規範を問い、本郷との恋愛を試みる私たち」（公益財団法人東京都歴史文化財団 東京都現代美術館 トーキョーアーツアンドスペース、2019年）、「By Way of Returns」（ロンドン、2019年）。その他、Whitechapel Gallery（ロンドン、2018年）、ArtReview（ロンドン、2017年）、Cafe OTO（ロンドン、2017年）、International Conference on Live Interfaces（ポルトガル、ポルト、2018年）、GENERATE!° Festival for Electronic Arts（ドイツ、チュービンゲン、2017年）、Tallinn Music Weekフェスティバル（エストニア、タリン、2017年）、DOMMUNE（東京、2017年）などで作品を発表。作品群はBBC Radio 3で複数回取り上げられており、レコードレーベルPROGRESSIVE FORM主催のリミックスコンテストでの最優秀賞受賞（2015年）を経て、同レーベルからアルバム『0000』をリリース（2017年）。映画音楽家として、チェルフィッチュ（岡田利規）、横浜聡子、太田信吾、川久保ジョイ、乃木坂46、HKT46、仮面女子などの映画音楽を制作。東京国際映画祭や国立新美術館を含め、国際的に上映されている。
